A Stylish Sitting Space

A Stylish Sitting Space

Hey Friends!  A few weeks ago I talked about shooting our sizzle reel and posted this photo.

Many of you wondered if you missed the post revealing this space.  You haven’t missed it.  I just recently made the time to go over and take some pictures.  And although the room is mostly finished, there are still some small tweaks I would like to make.  Even so, I decided I want to go ahead and post pictures of this space because I’m so excited to share it with you!

Today I am just revealing a portion of the room.  When I first visited Natalie’s home, there was one wall that I knew would be the focal point and in need of the most time, attention, and work.  It looked like this. . .

The inset space flanked with two closets creates an instant point of interest, but it was completely bare and blank!  No worries, that’s why Natalie called me! 🙂

I could have placed a buffet in the space, but I opted for a sitting area instead.  I wanted the room to feel like a place you would come and hang out in.  The room is has two walls full of windows, which look out onto a beautiful backyard full of greenery and a stunning pool.  So, who wouldn’t want to sit down and enjoy a view like that, right?

We called Tim in to build out the bench area, complete with concealed storage underneath. This concealed space was important since I was planning to remove the mirrored closet doors and use that area for display space.  Natalie is lucky enough to have family members who do upholstery, so she had the cushion and large pillows made up for us.

Because the inset was a focal point, we wanted to do something a little different than the just a plain paint color above the bench.  We opted to cover the wall with a beautiful oak wood, which we stained with our gray homemade stain.  The wood adds a nice texture to the space.

Once the wood was installed, I wanted to add sconces for both function and form.  Natalie and I chose the accordion style sconce because we felt like it brought in a little more character than a traditional fixed light.

Last, we needed to place the crowning jewel of the inset/bench area.  I love to use design to encourage others to follow after their dreams, to go after a goal.  Well, Natalie is a talented photographer and I spotted a particularly fun picture she captured of her kids on her Facebook wall.  As soon as I saw it, I knew it was the perfect piece for the wood wall.

Not only does the photo show off Natalie’s adorable children, it also pays homage to Natalie’s talent for capturing a moment!  So, I blew the photo up and had it printed on a canvas.  A few throw pillows later, and the sitting area was officially finished!

Once the bench was complete, it was time to tackle the closet turned display space.  We’ll cover that in a different post!

PS- If you’re in the area, Natalie is available to take photos for your family.  Find her company, Heart Smiles, on Facebook!

Oh my goodness, I feel so lucky that Tim and I enjoy the same career aspirations and get to help each other along the way! In high school we would have never guessed this is the road we would be on!

    Kara,
Awesome after!!! I love the wood wall, bench, lights, cushions and the photo. So basically all of it! Did you make the cushions and pillows? Beatiful! Can I ask you where you printed the canvas photo? I’m looking to make a canvas print for my mom and dad for Christmas. Thanks!
