Bathroom Floor Gets Teaked

Bathroom Floor Gets Teaked

Well, I almost feel like a normal person today!  I now have a bathroom with a functioning toilet, shower, and sink! Not only that, but it’s really starting to look like a place I’d want to spend some time in!

Last time you saw the space, it was in this condition. . .

Our next step was to lay the flooring.  We chose an unfinished teak because of it’s ability to stand up to moisture.  We haven’t got there yet, but eventually the teak will extend all the way into the shower creating a seamless look.  Tim will build it so that when a stressful day calls for a soak in the tub, I’ll be able to lift the teak panel and lean it against the wall, revealing the gorgeous poured concrete tub!

I stained the teak with a walnut color to get rid of the gold tones.  The blue of the wall and the gold of the floor was way too primary for me.  I love the rich look of the darker floor.  Here are a few shots of the finished look. . .

We still have a number of things left, but we are making major progress!  Stay tuned, the vanity makeover is the next bathroom project we’ll reveal! 🙂

this might be a silly question, but when you say the teak will extend into the shower and open to reveal the tub, does that mean you will stand on the teak door if you’re just showering? just curious! looks gorgeous regardless, you have such unique creations!!!

I have the same question as Theresa! If you are showering on the teak floor, then isn’t the shower head too low? enlighten us please! 🙂

Oh and I forgot to write I love the look. I didn’t know you could have a wooden bathroom floor, but I really truly love it. One day…

Love the floor! Also you used ardex on part of the walls in your shower, right? We have been mulling around trying to decide if we could/should ardex over the exsisting tile in our shower. Do you think Ardex is the right choice for a shower wall? Thanks! Love your blog – read it almost everyday!

When we add the teak floor above the bathtub we will adjust the shower head to an appropriate height. It may be a while so I left it low so the short girl could reach it for now.

I wouldn’t recommend going over tile in a shower. The ARDEX product that is made to go over almost anything including tile is not an exterior grade product and I wouldn’t risk it failing being exposed to constant water. I think it is fine for a counter if you use a good sealer and don’t flood your countertops daily. The product we are using the in our shower is an exterior product so it should do fine in the wet areas, but I wouldn’t trust that it would adhere to tile. We waterproofed hardiboard with ARDEX’s 8+9 system and we are hopeful it will stick. They wouldn’t warrant an application like this since it is “off label” but we trust their quality and are willing to risk that a product designed to with stand mother nature will handle our shower.
