Behind the Scenes of Our “DIY Magazine” Photo Shoot

Hello, hello and happy Tuesday! Today I am going to share a little behind the scenes action from our DIY Magazine photo shoot! Unfortunately Tim and I weren’t able to hang around for the 1st day of shooting because we were busy working on the movie. But luckily we were able to sneak off set for a day and take part in what was going on in our own home.

Here is the awesome crew that came to take pictures of our house- Brenda (the stylist) is in the center, then Jay (the photographer), and then Megan (the photography assistant). The crew fell in love with Dolly and Paisley and insisted they be in the picture as well. 🙂

If you haven’t worked in media of some sort you may not realize all the work that goes into shooting a home for a magazine. You may think that the magazine hires a photographer to come take pictures and that is the extent of it. But you would be wrong. First the editors at the magazine decide which spaces that want to shoot based on the demographics that they are trying to hit. For example, the editors at “DIY” decided they didn’t want to shoot our master bathroom because it just didn’t seem like a project that most DIYers would take on.
Next, the magazine decides what issue/time of year they want to the material to go into. Based on the time of year the issue will come out, the editors then collaborate with a stylist to make sure the subject matter fits with the season. For example, our home will probably be in the issue around April or May. So, the magazine wanted to make sure they shot some of our outdoor spaces and included lots of fresh, summery flowers in shots with in the house.
I was really excited to see what our stylist (Brenda) would do with our space. Some of you might have thought it would be hard for me to allow someone else to come into my space and change things. But it wasn’t hard at all. If you know me well, you know that I love to give people the freedom to do the job that they love. When I go into hair salons and they ask me what I want, I generally ask, “well, what do you think would look good?” Basically my thought process is, you are the professional at this and therefore you know what should be done better than I do. Usually the hair stylists just look at me and rarely make any suggestions other than “long layers, ” but I still love giving people the opportunity to shine in their jobs. Anyway, all that to say, I knew Brenda would keep any changes she made in line with Tim and I’s style and I was excited to see that she would do to freshen up our space for a spring issue!
I can’t share photos of the rooms completely put together (you’ll have to buy the issue to see that) but I thought I give you a few sneak peak photos.

Another thing that you may not realize is that magazine photos rarely are a true representation of how a home looks. In order to get the right look in a photo, a couch may be removed from a room, a chair may be put in front of a door way, or a rug may be cheated a few feet from it’s correct resting spot. Things are shifted to make sure the picture looks good. We do the same thing in television productions. Here are few ways they did that in our home.

There were also plenty of projects we took on to make our home picture perfect before DIY got there. Here are a few sneak peaks of those projects that we will be covering in the coming weeks!

So, anyway there is a little look into our DIY Magazine photo shoot! I can’t wait until it comes out in print!
And before I go I just have to give a super duper huge THANK YOU to my incredible mom. She came over and spent not just hours but days helping us get our home ready for this whole thing. Mom, you’re the best and we love you so much!!!!

Love it! I can’t wait to see the printed issue! Also, I’ve seen that rug floating around lately, and I really like it. 🙂
