Sometimes I think I should write a small book detailing all the workings behind the company Anthropologie. If you’ve been a long time reader or have snooped around the blog a bit, you know that I worked for the company creating their displays about a year ago.
Long story short, there were a lot of amazing things about the job. . . and then their were some not so amazing things. All in all, it just wasn’t the dream job I hoped it would be and I decided to leave.
None the less, I am very happy that I had the opportunity to work for the company that I had always admired and went to for design inspiration. I would choose to do it over in an instant because I learned so much about art, running a business, managing people, and myself while I was there.
Wow, how did I go into all that? This post was really about finally showing you how I made the paper flowers I created for Anthro. Remember these?
If you’re a fan of the look, you are going to be thrilled to see how easy the process really is! So, here’s what you’ll need:
– Paper (The bigger the piece of paper, the bigger flower you can make- if you want a large flower choose a thicker paper. I used poster board.)
– scissors
– hot glue gun and glue sticks
Step #1- Draw a spiral on your piece of paper. The larger your piece, the more space you will want to leave in between the spirals. Once you are comfortable with the process, you don’t have to draw the spiral, just start cutting.
Step #2- Cut around the line all the way to the center of the spiral.
You will end up with this. . .
Step #3- Take the center point in your hand and start to curl the spiral around using hot glue to tack it in place every few inches.
The “flower” will start to build up creating a 3-D effect from what once was a flat surface.
Step #4- Cut some leaves out of paper and attach them to the flower.
Pretty soon, you’ll have field of adorable paper flowers! Easy, right!!! 🙂 These would be great for a wedding, a shower, or some fun artwork. You can do large scale for that WOW factor or you can do a small scale for a sweet finishing detail.
Yay! I’m thinking maybe this should be a regular series. It could be called “Anthro Unraveled” or “Anthro Revealed” and I can show you how to create all the things you see in their stores. Hummm, I’ll think about that. 🙂
See you tomorrow! 🙂
Love it, I will definetly give them a try!
Fun! Those are really cute – and I like the idea of the feature you mention 🙂
Love all the Anthro displays and love the idea of this being a regular series 🙂 Count me in!
those are really cool! And I think you should definitely make this a regular thing!
aww.. that would be an awesome series. I like this ideal… anthro decor revealed!
Kara – you HAVE to do an Anthro revealed series!! Not only would it be a great place to come to see great pics of Anthro displays (I don’t have a store nearby and pics rarely show enough detail to figure our how they’re made) but it would be great to get ideas on how to create large displays using cheap materials. Love this idea so please make it happen!! I’m all about big bang for your bucks and this type of displays are definitely it.
How can it possibly be that simple? Those puppies were magic, I tell you! I just knew there was some secret I could not know behind the scenes in the magic Anthro. And now I know….paper, scissors, glue. WOW.
This entry made me very very happy 🙂
I would love a series like that! Anthro always has the best displays!!
Kara – Thanks for the interesting tutorial on the paper flowers. Inspiring. Look forward to more.
