Inspiration File: Red Hill Home

Tim and I got to head back to Arkansas this weekend and while we were there we decided to check out Red Hill Home in Fayetteville. They just had their grand reopening a few weeks back and we were excited to check out their new digs.

We found lots of “local produce,” paintings by local artist, repurposed items, and antiques. We took lots of pictures to share with you. We both enjoy checking out shops like this, looking for inspiration.

They claim to have some great “pickers” always bringing in new treasures. I am going to have to do a stakeout and follow them to find out where they find all their vintage letters. They had a nice collection of letters made of a variety of materials.

Tim commented that their items and aesthetic reminded him a lot of one of favorite etsy shops, Bellalulu Vintage. They both manage to find vintage items that possess equal parts character and whimsy.

I was happy to find out that the owners don’t just buy and resell other’s wares, but are actually personally responsible for some of the art on the walls. If you aren’t local, you can check out some of the paintings online.

My sister in law had made it to the store before and was telling us about “Chalk Paint.” (Not to be confused with Chalkboard paint). She had spoken with one of the owners of the store and gotten a complete run down of this product’s impressive qualities. Unfortunately, by the time we made it over to check things out the owner had stepped out. We did found this pretty incredible list of claims:
1. It’s the BEST paint for painting furniture by a long way
2. You can use the paint by diluting it with water to make a wash to show the wood grain
3. You can use it as an impasto ( thickly) – leave the lid off to thicken
4. You can use it on any surface, indoors and out ( the outside of our shop was painted in it- perfect!)
5. No need to prime or prepare
6. The colours are mixed intelligently and the web site shows how you can adapt your colours for your use
7. It’s a girls’ paint, but boys can use it too.
8. It’s flexible so you can be creative and change you mind
9. The paint can be washed off your brush even when you find your brush weeks later. [I never do that of course.]
10. It allows your walls to breathe so it is perfect for cottage walls
11. Extremely low VOCs so it is good for the environment
12. It doesn’t form a skin on it when you leave the lid off – just add some water if it’s too thick
13. Very little black is used in their manufacture so the colours are mixed with thought
14. You can paint it on walls for a soft matt effect or wax it for a polished plaster effect

We got some and I can’t wait to give it a shot and judge for myself. Tim is a bit skeptical to say the least. If you are to impatient to wait for our thoughts you can stop the store or get it online here. If it is as good as it claims, I am pretty sure I will single handily keep them in business. I hate paint prep work.

Have any of you heard of Chalk Paint? Have you tried it? What did you think? Does it stand up to its claims? Do you have any tips or recommendations?

BAH! I am going here this weekend if possible! All because of you. My husbands family lives in Siloam Springs and we live in Edmond OK for the time being but we have a wedding there this weekend and it will give me a perfect reason to stop by! I love chalk paint too! Good Find!

MissMustardSeed.blogspot.com is ALL about the Chalk Paint. I’m intrigued, too, but I’m going to try my own thrifty version using artist’s gesso. We’ll see… Have fun!

    Kara and Tim…
I missed this post when it was originally posted, but found it today. So funny- when I started reading it and saw those pictures I was thinking, WOW- I need to go to that store NOW. It’s great! And then you mentioned it reminded you of my shop- what a compliment! Thank you! Now, how fast can I get to Fayetteville? 🙂
