Today I am back to share a small display that we put together at Anthro. And when I say “we” I mean me and my interns!!! But mainly my interns. Have I mentioned that I have incredibly wonderful and talented ladies working for and with me? I do! Would you like to meet them? Of course you would! From back to front, meet Aubrey, Kelli, Katie, and Nataley! (Kelsey is not pictured because she joined us a little late.)
I think one of the most important things to do when managing people is to remember what it felt like when you were in their shoes. Although they do have to do “interny” things here and there, I am trying to teach them and give them creative license whenever possible. For this display we literally had to come up with something that used whatever we had in the art room (because our budget for the month was blown). It was meant to be a very small moment in the store so we didn’t have to think of a grand gesture, just something interesting and and appropriate for the theme of that area.
I wanted my girls to take some ownership and have the opportunity to say that they thought of and installed a real display at Anthropologie. So, after some brainstorming and collaboration, we came up with a plan and got to work. I popped in to give tips and lend a hand here and there, but otherwise I left it up to my totally talented interns. Here’s how it turned out.
The goal of the display was to come up with something that exuded an earthy, exotic, 70’s vibe. We also needed to work in some product (the cluster of mirrors, lanterns, and pots). And of course at Anthropologie we love use plants to liven up any display.
Our resources were extremely limited. We decided to use almost all the fabric we had in the art room to create this braided patchwork installation. Because we used things we already had available we/they were able to pull off this display for FREE.
As things came together, we each felt like the piece resembled one of those braided rugs that grandma used to have (except much more chic of course!) 🙂 Who knows, maybe when it’s time for this display to come down, I’ll finish it out and throw it on my floor at home! 🙂

I love this! Making something special with a tiny or non-existent budget is the best challenge. I love the texture of the braids. Being your intern would be a great way to spend a summer! They are obviously a talented bunch.
