Separation Needed- The Entry Way Wall

Separation Needed- The Entry Way Wall

In the design/renovation world,  you always hear about “opening things up.”  The design trend right now is tear down walls and create large great rooms as opposed to multiple small rooms.  I live in a loft, so of course I love the idea of an open floor plan.  However, I think a well placed wall (or divider) can be exactly what’s needed some instances.  Case in point- our entry way.

Before this weekend, when you entered our place through the front door, you walked straight into our “kitchen.”  We’ve always planned to build a wall about 8 feet in from the door.  I’ve wanted this wall to be what welcomes people into our space as well as what defines the kitchen area.

So, this weekend Tim built the wall and I helped him put it in place.

You can’t quite tell what’s going on just yet, but I will try to explain.  For a strictly visual reason, we decided to create a steel frame to go around the wall.  We love the look of raw steel and thought it would be a nice addition.  We plan to clad each side of the wall with wood planks. (PS- the lockers will move.)

You may have also noticed that the wall doesn’t have 2X4’s running all the way from the bottom to the top.  That’s because we plan to leave a horizontal window/opening in the wall.  I think this opening will be visually interesting and allow some light from the entry way to make it’s way into the kitchen.

It’s not much to look at yet, but with any luck, we’ll have some finished pictures to post soon!
