The Perfect Hardware and Gold Leafing

The Perfect Hardware and Gold Leafing

Hey Friends! I hope you enjoyed hearing from Tim yesterday! He always finds the coolest stuff online!

Anyway last week, I started to refinish a buffet/console table for a client’s living room. This particular client enjoys an elegant yet simple style with some natural elements thrown in. When it comes to dresser, buffets, and console tables, I love to use hardware to add a touch of the unexpected or to give a piece that extra bit of uniqueness.

Normally, I try Hobby Lobby and Anthropologie when it comes to find cool knobs, and sometimes I even make my own drawer pulls. But this time around I didn’t find the right fit when I was out shopping nor did I figure our a DIY version to try. Soooooo, I turned to Ebay! And guess what. . . I found the perfect pulls!
I was looking for some wooden pulls that had a bit of character to them. I wanted wooden pulls because I was sanding down the top of my piece to reveal and refinish the gorgeous wood and I wanted to take that tone and bring it down onto the drawer and cabinet fronts. Knicks and Knacks 4 sale just happened to have a product that fit my needs exactly! I bought them and they arrived a few days later looking like this. . .

I love their character, but I wanted to add just a bit of bling and use some poly to really bring out the luster of the wood grain. To add the elegance I was looking for, I decided to use some gold leafing.

IMG_8710If you’ve never gold leafed before, it’s a really easy but delicate process. You simply:

1. Apply the metal leaf adhesive to a surface.
2. Allow the adhesive to dry a bit.
3. When the adhesive gets tacky, very gently take your gold leaf and press it onto the adhesive.
4. Then use you finger or a brush to remove the leafing that didn’t stick.
5. Chances are you will need to apply an additional coat of adhesive and leafing to get full coverage on your piece.

And that’s it- super duper simple!

So, after I applied the gold leaf and polyurethane to the pulls, they looked like this. . .

Stay tuned! Tomorrow I’ll reveal the full mini makeover and show you how these pieces look in place!
