About a week ago, a reader e-mailed me saying they really wanted some ideas on how to display family photos. This reader had noticed that I don’t have many photos hanging in my house, but was hoping I could still provide her with some unique ideas. Well I’m happy to say, on this lovely Friday, I’ve put together a post to cover just that.
Before we get started, I’d like to discuss the reason I don’t have a lot of photos in my home. I hadn’t previously ever really thought about why I don’t display photos. I do value my family, but I don’t feel the need to hang photos everywhere. In the past, I have chosen or made decor items that remind me of where I came from or speak to who I am. Probably the main reason I have opted not to display photos is because it seems too normal and, in case you haven’t figured it out yet, I like design that is a bit out-of-the-box! 🙂 That is why I am excited about this post- it covers a number of unique, out-of-the-box ideas to display family photos, or at least to pay homage to the ones we love so dearly!
Ok, so gallery walls are beautiful (especially when done right), but they’re not exactly a new idea. However, I wanted to include this photo for my readers who want to play it a little more safe. You could also incorporate some of the more unique ideas into a gallery wall to personalize it even more!

Now, I love this idea from Ashley Ann. Why not paint a “Family Tree” on the wall and hang photos in the appropriate spot. The ending result is both artful and personal!
And let’s not forget about those lovable fur babies most of us have. If you follow us on Pinterest, you’ve already seen these amazing and interesting photos below. These works of art were taken by Carli Davidson and I just love them. They make me smile.
I don’t know a lot about cameras, but I think you take similar photos if you’ve got a semi- professional camera. I think grouping these pics in a set of three is perfect because it shows movement and would bring incredible life to a space! If your camera doesn’t have the shutter speed to capture these shots, opt for a different series of positions. Chihuahuas not your thing? Click this link to check out some other pups Carli has photographed!
Are any of you fans of Andy Warhol? Well, now there are plenty of websites where you can turn your own photos into “Pop Art.” Just imagine your face in place of Ms. Marilyn! It’s also a great way to add color into your space! Get your personal pics converted at Photo Wow.
Ok, this next idea doesn’t show off family member’s faces, but it does show you exactly who they are! DNA Art is a fairly new product and I think its crazy cool! Perfect for a scientist, researcher, or doctor!
Have you ever noticed how even the most mundane object can be incredible when displayed in mass quantities? (Thank you Anthropolgie for that lesson.) Well, I think this huge photo grid is amazing and I would totally do this in my space. It’s perfect for telling a story about who you are and who you love!
In the photo below, Casa Sugar illustrates how to show off postcards in this old metal display case. Well, those postcards could just as easily be replaced with pictures of family and friends. I bet you can find these fixtures at flea markets or fixture supply stores.
I’m ending this post with a more abstract idea. You remember my DIY Bust/Silhouette Ideas, right? I think it would be wonderful to create a wooden bust/silhouette of your mom, grandma, grandpa, daughter, son. . . or anyone special to you! Just print out a profile pic of the selected loved one and follow the tutorial! You could then forego the base and hang it on the wall (possibly within your gallery wall) or use it for jewelry like I’ve previously suggested.
So those are all my out-of-the-box ideas, but I’m sure you can come up with a million more! If you do or if you decide to take on one of these ideas, you know I’d love to see it!
Have a wonderful weekend!

Tim’s for the studio is so much nicer!
Very cool. I think I might Photo Wow my fur-baby, Cooper! AND I love that silhouette diplay. Again, very cool.

fun ideas! My stairway is getting a photo layout on it if I can ever get myself motivated to get it done. like your bust ideas too.
I just love that huge over sized frame! It gives me great inspiration to make something similar while staying on a budget. Thanks for sharing.
Lots of great ideas! Thanks for sharing! It can be hard to find new ways to hang photos all over the house.
