LADDER STYLE ABACUS

LADDER STYLE ABACUS
Have I mentioned that I LOVE designing kid’s rooms? I absolutely do! People feel more free to allow me to design “outside the box.” Today I want to show you one of those “outside the box” ideas.
A while ago I decided I wanted to create an oversized abacus. For those of you scratching your heads right now, an abacus is a chinese counting calculator. . .or at least it was at one point. Now, they probably give their kids TI-89’s straight out of the womb. 😉 . . . Was that funny or cheesy? Tim is not here to edit my thoughts!
Below: Traditional Abacus
Anyway, as previously mentioned I have been inspired to design individual items lately and I finally got around to producing my own version of the chinese teaching tool! Check it out!
About 90% of the piece is made up of reclaimed materials and the bare wood makes sure all those moms that are worried about chemicals are kept happy!
I love the idea that as a child grows mentally and physically he/she can use more and more of the piece. I could also see parents keeping track of their child’s height by scratching lines into the bare wood and adding dates. At least these are the things I think I would enjoy if I had kids.
The whole piece is fairly lightweight and could easily be attached to the wall for those concerned with safety.
Although I have been saying how great this abacus would be in a kid’s space, I think it’s cool enough to keep company with adults as well!
