Hello, hello!  A couple of weeks ago, Tim and I traveled to a little town a few hours away to implement a design that we have been working on for a client.  The home is a new construction and the family hadn’t moved in yet, so we were literally working with a blank slate. For the moment, we are concentrating on three rooms in the house- the dining room, living room, and master bedroom.  We bought a number of items for the spaces, but we also made sure to create unique pieces for each room as well.  (Remember the custom table top we created for this home?)

Well, in the master bedroom I wanted to choose nightstands that wouldn’t be dwarfed by the king size bed and large space, plus I wanted them to have a good amount of storage.  So, I decided on this. . .

Well. . . not this exactly. With just a few modifications, this ugly office furniture became a beautiful bedside table.  Check it out!

As you can see, we started off with an ugly brown horizontal filing cabinet.  The great thing about the piece was the amount of storage it had and that it was made of metal. You guys know how I love to use metallic hues in spaces!  So rather than hide the material with paint, I opted to sand the entire thing down to bare metal.  After a ton of sanding, this beautiful, sleek steel was revealed!

Building a wood base for the piece and painting the handles gold brought a nice warmth to the piece and balances out the “cold” metal.  The wood base also helps to really sell the idea that this piece belongs in the bedroom rather than an office. . .  although I would use it in either! 🙂

A home full of store bought items lacks personality, so we like to bring the character in with one-of-a-kind pieces.  Stay tuned for more especially unique items we are bringing into this home. . . and get some ideas for your own space!
