Hey Friends! Today I am revealing a closet turned recording studio makeover! I’ve designed multiple rooms for Amanda in the past and I have to say the focal wall in this space is one of my favorite features ever!
Now, you know that I love to celebrate what a space is used for and pay homage to it’s purpose through my designs. Obviously, since this space will be used to record songs I wanted to create something that made reference to music!
Let’s look at the BEFORE and AFTER . . .
Can you tell what I was going for? The wall was meant to resemble a music equalizer. You know, one of these things you see on fancy CD players among other things.
I created this focal wall by padding and upholstering rectangles with different colored fabrics. The rectangles were cut from duct board for acoustic purposes. I attached the pieces to the wall with industrial strength velcro.
If you’ve been around for any length of time, you know I love color and luckily so does Amanda! 🙂 This rainbow installation simply makes my heart happy!!
On the other side of the room there was a cutout with some shelves. We embraced the space and decided it was a perfect place to set up all the necessary equipment for recording music. The shelving holds musical equipment, a computer, office supplies, and a few decorative items.
The light in the space is really cool. Unfortunately, I had a very difficult time photographing it, especially in the full length shots. In person the fixture really adds to the design. Hopefully you can imagine how cool it is by these few photos.
Can you believe I found this incredible fixture at Habitat for Humanity ReStore for $20!!! Deal of the century! I dig it’s retro vibe!
So, there you have it! A closet turned recording studio! What do you think?
I’m thinking about writing a post featuring all the functions a closet can perform if you think outside the box. Turning closets into offices is a pretty common occurrence. Has anyone seen other super cool ways to use a closet space? I’d love to hear about them! Leave links in the comment section!
Happy a glorious weekend!
Kara, What did you use on the other walls? Is that material too? My husband & I are finishing a recording studio in our house (for voiceovers) & are trying to think of creative ideas. Thanks so much! Love your blog & your ideas! <3 Heidi Rew from Parties for Pennies
Hey Heidi! The rest of the walls are also covered in duct board. It is great for sound proofing! We didn’t cover those pieces with fabric, but you certainly could! I think you could also use it like a big bulletin board. PS- Duct board is a bit expensive. . . about $40 for a 4ftX10ft sheet. I’d love to see pics of your studio when you’re done!!!
This looks amazing!!! The music equalizer wall was a great idea! I’ve been waiting to see how it turned out since you originally introduced the concept and the wait was worth it.
Beautiful & SO creative! I love the colors.
This is fantastic! Is that dark brown grasscloth on the walls that meet the “equalizer” wall?
My favorite is when closets fit a crib perfectly and turn into “baby’s room,” at least for a little while. Or in my case, it holds a kennel and is “doggy’s room.”
I love that light fixture, such a lucky find! My bf and I are actually in the beginning stages of building a dry bar in our old coat closet (here’s a link if you want to check out our plans theambitiuosprocrastinator.blogspot.com/2012/03dry-bar-mood-board?html) hopefully we will be buying cabinets this week! It’s amazing what you can get out of just a couple extra square feet if you’re creative!
