DIY- Old Fashioned Milk Jug

Last week I showed you a kitchen that I decorated for a cooking show. While shopping for that show, Tim and I stubbled across these really cool ceramic milk bottles that looked vintage but were actually bought brand new. (See them there on the stainless steel shelf?)

Now, I love finding one of a kind treasures, but I was happy to come across these bottles at the big box store- Bed, Bath, and Beyond. Why was I happy? Because I knew that I could share this source with all of you in case you liked these old fashioned look-a-likes as much as we do! The large bottles are $9.99 and the small bottles are $3.99.
Now of course these bottles are charming just as they are, but I thought why not add a little extra personality to them! I googled vintage milk bottles to get inspiration for a fun logo.

After I was sufficiently inspired, I came up with a design for my milk bottles. Here’s the step by step process of how I painted it on the ceramic bottle.
Step 1- Clean the bottle with alcohol.
Step 2- Cover the area that will have the logo with painters tape.
Step 3- Draw the logo onto the tape or print out a logo and trace it onto the tape.

Step 4- Use and exacto knife to cut you logo out of the tape. Don’t worry- you won’t harm the bottle as long as you don’t press too hard.

Step 5- Paint the exposed areas with glass paint (Find it at your local craft store). Make sure to put a good coat on.
Step 6- Remove the tape quickly! If you allow the paint to dry, you will peel it up with the tape.
Step 7- Allow paint to dry. If any edged need to be smoothed out, use the edge of your exacto knife. Remember, keeping some edges imperfect will add to the vintage feel!
Step 8- Last, follow the instructions on the glass paint label to permanently adhere the paint to your bottle. (Mine says to bake the bottles for 30 min or allow it to air dry for 30 days.
And here’s the finished product!!

I was excited to personalize my logo and I think I really like how it turned out. Of course, painting a number or something like that dramatically reduces the amount of time it takes to complete this project and looks really cute as well!
I can’t wait to actually use my bottles for almond milk (maybe it will help me drink it), as flower vases, and more!
