Hello blog friends! You may have noticed that I have missed a couple of blog posts lately. Well part of that was me trying to prepare for our DIY Magazine shoot (which is happening today!!) and the other reason was because Tim and I are working on our second movie (I’m the set decorator and he’s the lead man). Movies require long hours but I find them so rewarding. Anyway, I hope you’ll forgive me for not getting to post as much but I am trying to make sure that I give you some quality ideas and inspiration when I do make the time to sit down and write.
On a small side note, it just so happens that the director of the movie we are working on knows Dolly Parton personally! He has her cell number in his phone!!!! OMG, I’m so close to getting to meet her! I told David (the director) not to be surprised if his phone went missing for a few minutes. He laughed and I’m pretty sure he didn’t think I was serious, but I don’t mind becoming a felon if it means I get to meet the queen of country music!!!! David has continually told me how great Dolly is in real life (as if I didn’t know 🙂 haha) and I’m still hoping I can talk him into setting up a meet and greet for me since Dolly will be in Tulsa on October 8th for a concert. Yes I’m going. Yes, I am sitting in the front row. And yes, I am sure Dolly and I will lock eyes and she will instantly see me as her best friend and hire me to decorate her entire house. Yes, this will happen. 🙂
Ok, on to the mini makeover.
One of my favorite things ever is modifying an item to be completely or slightly different from its original style or purpose. I was never really in love with our living room fixture and I thought this fixture below provided an opportunity to change that.
As you can see, I’m pretty sure this fixture was used in a bathroom over a vanity. Although it’s not quite as gaudy as the gold ones you see, it still wasn’t very stylish. The first thing I wanted to do was pop off the wall mounting plate because I knew I wanted to suspend the light in the air and that plate would make it feel awkward.
It easily popped off with a screw driver.
Then I decided that I wanted to use old pulleys to suspend it from the ceiling. I’m kind of obsessed with old pulleys. I have to make a concerted effort not to buy every single one I see. Function + Form= Winning Combination
To attach the fixture to the pulleys, Tim put a carriage bolt through a hole he drilled through the wood fixture and the metal part of the pulley.
And then we covered the cord with rope of course because ropes and pulleys are like peanut butter and jelly!!!
So here’s the full on frontal view of the fixture.
It’s so much more our style that the previous chandelier with mini shades! Yay for modified makeovers!
