So, you may have heard that the fashion world is bringing some of the 70’s styles back around. For example, skinny jeans are out and wide legged pants are in!!! Thank you Jesus, my thighs are so tired of being constricted! 🙂

Anyway, as usual the fashion scene and design world are keeping in step with each other and soon you will see 70’s styled interiors all over the place. Of course the rooms will feel more fresh and modern than what went on 30-40 years ago, but 70’s inspired none the less.
Also, one trend I think you will start seeing more and more of are the hanging macrame plant holders. You remember them, your grandma or mom had them adorning every corner of their house (and possibly still do).

And while these macrame guys have long felt outdated to me, I recently have really started liking them! Of course as with any trend, this time around things will be tweaked and cleaned up a bit. Here are some inspiring images I’ve found online.

I think keeping the rope crisp and clean both color and texture wise will help this trend make the leap to 2011! I’m excited to see how people begin to play with this idea and create beautiful hanging gardens.
So, I’m totally for this old trend coming back around, what about you guys? I think I need to go raid my grandfather’s house! 🙂
PS- For all of you that are not sure what “macrame” means- it is defined as- The art of knotting cord or string in patterns to make decorative articles.
OH MY! I just dug out my mom’s 1970’s macrame plant holder this weekend. I wanted to hang a plant outside and thought it would be perfect. I LOVE IT! So vintage! Up here in Owasso, we like the trend as well.
Skinny jeans are out again? Dang. Oh well, I’m still wearing mine.
I LOVE that AT plant holder! NEED one.
I’m SO glad to hear that skinny jeans are on their way out! Sigh. of. relief. My 5th grade teacher taught our class how to make macrame plant hangers. Mine hung on our front porch for many years after that. It was all frizzy at the bottom (which we achieved by unraveling the rope and then brushing it out with a hairbrush)… I’m liking the crisper and cleaner texture of the new versions.
thought you might like to see some other 70s era inspiration shots! http://loveyourspace.blogspot.com/2011/03/macrame.html
MY mom made macrame wall hangings (etc.) and now I have all the books.
Funny, I just ordered a couple of old macrame books from Amazon last week because I wanted to make some hanging plant holders. I couldn’t find books anywhere else. I have a lot of those same photos you posted in my inspiration folder. I’m way off on the jeans though because I just finally bought my first pair of skinny jeans 2 weeks ago… oh well.
Ladies, I think we are onto something! I’d love to see any macrame plant hangers you end up creating! 🙂
i didn’t realize macrame was making a comeback, i love it and pieces always catch my eye, hopefully this trend will make it easier not harder to come by…
I’m so happy to see macrame making a big comeback. I write a macrame blog and its so much fun to see what new ways designers are starting to incorporate it.
For anyone looking for more info about how to macrame, I just wanted to post a link to our
