Happy Thursday Friends! I hope you had a wonderful 4th of July! I get very sentimental when I think about our country and our service men and women. I am so thankful to live in America!
If you read last week’s blog posts, you know Tim and I were planning to discuss design dilemmas on our monthly Channel 2 segment. But after thinking about it a little bit more, I thought a segment on patriotic home decor would be much more fitting!
Of course around this time of the year, you start to see a lot of patriotic party decor ideas. Although I love those cute paper pinwheels, we really feel like our country can and should be celebrated through our decor year round and not just during the 4th or Memorial Day. So, to get ready for this segment I gathered some items I already had and then I made a trip to the Army surplus store. I am now in love with the Army surplus store. There are so many items perfect for creating different decor options. Here’s the loot I came home with: (2) pairs of military uniform pants, 2 small flags, 2 large flags, tons of patches, gold buttons, and a camouflage net.
I had tons of ideas of what to do with my bounty of American/military goods, but I had to edit due to the segment time and space. You can see what I ended up with below!
So, let’s go through the different ideas!
1. This is an easy piece of art (which includes a replica of The Constitution) I snagged from a gift shop on our recent trip to the St. Louis Arch.
2. Mason Jars! What’s more American than a mason jar! 🙂 They’re great for so many things besides actually canning food. Use them all over your home to add to that patriotic feel!
3. Pictures of service members. I have a special place in my heart for service men and women. I am just so blown away by their selfless sacrifice. I would like to create a whole wall full of old and new photos of service members (those related to me and those not). They could never be thanked enough for their sacrifice, but we can at least honor them by hanging their photos on our wall and remembering to be thankful for the freedom they helped to provide everyday! The photo in this set-up is of my Papa. He was a sailor. I love looking at this handsome photo and thinking about him serving in the submarine he has told us about. Papa, if you’re reading this- I love you and thank you for your service to our country.
8 &9. Pillows can be easily customized with different military patches, trim, and more. I’ll show you the simple process to make these pillows in the next few days! 🙂
10. Red, white, and Blue- One of the easiest ways to bring in the Americana feel is to use the red, white, and blue color palette. But remember that you can change the hues of these colors to help them fit your style. For example if you are in a more traditional space, you could use maroons, navys, and creams. But if you’re decorating a child’s room, you might opt for fire engine red, light blues, and bright whites!
So, today we’ve shown you some creative patriotic decor ideas that you can use year round. In the next week, we will go over how to create each of these items and possibly a few more! Tim and I love the idea of being able to use real pieces from your family members’ military gear to make your decor feel even more authentic and personal, so definitely take advantage of those items if they’re available. Keeping military members service at the forefront of our minds will honor their sacrifice and remind us to be thankful for our freedoms every day.
‘Til tomorrow! 🙂
Love that you chose a patriotic theme!! Hopefully will use some of these ideas soon : )
