So last week, I told you Tim and I worked on a project in this amazing studio space. This week I have some fun photos to share of the set we completed there. We started with a blank slate (that had great bones) and ended up with this. . .
The set was created to shoot a series of videos having to do with marriage, parenting, sex, finances, and more. The creator of the curriculum and teacher in the videos is a man named Joe McGee. If you are interested in finding out more about him, you can click here. Below is a snap shot I took of Joe’s website. When designing the set, I tried to come up with elements that fit with the message Joe was trying to convey and the feel his website already had.
The main thing that Joe tries to do is to grow and strengthen relationships. For that reason, I wanted to set to have a very natural, organic feel to it.
I painted a canvas with a graphic tree very similar to the logo on Joe’s website and hung it behind the stage that Joe would be talking from. I also hung four other canvas panels on different plains to create depth in the space. 2 panels were dip dyed and 2 panels displayed a pattern also found on Joe’s website.
The stump side tables throughout the space went with the theme and added some nice texture to the set. The large stump to the side of the stage acted as Joe’s podium.
Since this DVD set will speak to both men and women, it was important that the set was somewhat gender neutral. However, since Joe himself is a guy I leaned towards slightly masculine features and then added a few feminine touches. There were different light sources throughout the space, but the decorative lighting consisted of some industrial style pendants. The varying edison bulbs gave off a beautiful warm glow and looked really cool.
Because this set was created for a DVD teaching/preaching series, I was asked to create an atmosphere where couples could come and interact with Joe as he spoke. They would also be on camera so I created 6 small vignettes where each couple would sit to listen and ask questions.
So, that’s it folks. I can’t wait to see the finished product on video! I was hired by Corey Lack to complete this set. Corey is an amazing photographer and videographer and I totally recommend giving him a call if you’re in need of those services! Because they are really amazing, I wanted to show you some of his photographs before I left. Enjoy!
Such lovely images! Ok, more fun to share tomorrow!
PS- If you’re in the Tulsa area I have a couple of stump side tables left over. They are $50 each- e-mail me if you’d like one!!

Wish I were in the Tulsa area. I was admiring the tables through the entire post. They’re phenomenal!
Oh my Kara, the set looks gorgeous! You’re such an inspiration. I live in the DC Metro area else I would have grabbed two of your stump side tables right NOW. But I can’t 🙁
Can you tell me though where to find one or better still can you ask Tim to write a tutorial on how to make one? The tutorial doesn’t need to have photos – I don’t want him to make one for it. just a text tutorial would be great. Thank you. I love love love your work!
