Built in Bed and More Metal in the Upstairs Room

Built in Bed and More Metal in the Upstairs Room
Not long ago the upstairs room looked like this. . .

It was basically a catch-all room lacking any sense of style. As Tim and I were space planning for the room, we were trying to maximize the space we had. Did you notice that built-in bench against the window wall? Well, it really didn’t allow us to maximize that side of the room. We didn’t really need all the seating that the built-in bench provided in this room, so we came up with a different plan.

Although I was skeptical at first, Tim promised me that he could build a bed into the bench by the time DIY Magazine came to take pictures. After a few more assurances from Tim, I agreed and was excited about making the room function to its fullest potential. The idea was the Tim would cut into the bench and build out a bed, allowing the mattress to sit right below the window. Not only did this open up some more space, it allowed the window to serve as a headboard of sorts and the remaining parts of the bench to serve as night stands for the bed.

Of course we couldn’t just settle for a functional space, we wanted it to look great too! Yesterday I told you that covered the drafting table top with metal to help break up all the wood in the space. Well we needed to do the same on this side of the room! Instead of having a regular box spring, Tim built one and covered it in the the matching metal.

We also agreed that the new “nightstand” tops should be wrapped in metal as well. The metallic addition really adds a sleek, modern and industrial feel to the space!

We also added some amazing metal casters to the end of the bed. The bed is fixed in its place, so they casters don’t actually role, but I love the look of them!

So now that we have plenty of metal and wood in the space, it’s time to add a little softness to balance out all these hard surfaces! A few of you have already asked about that special ceiling treatment, tomorrow I’ll show you how it’s done! 🙂

I can not wait to see the final product! We have an unfinished upstairs we have been working on. One side still does not have sheet rock. Right now we have a blank canvas with no idea what to do with it! Our stairway is right in the middle of the room. It’s presenting a problem for us.

I love the bed. I’m remodeling my pool room into a studio and I want to include a bed, fold out or otherwise. That way when the holidays roll around we have more options. Great work
