Dreaming of a new kitchen but not sure if you can afford those fancy custom cabinets? Newsflash! YOU DON’T HAVE TO!! Read on to see how to paint your cabinets and take your kitchen to a whole new level!
Stacy had just moved in to her newly built bungalow, but she couldn’t wait to beautify her “builder grade” cabinets and create a custom look. Knowing I love a good makeover, she called me to help and we got to work sanding, priming, and painting!
I am prone to ample excitement at the beginning of projects and often forget to take “before” pictures. Luckily we remembered in the nick of time and were able to prop the doors up for a pic to give you a good idea of what this kitchen looked like on day 1.
After taking off the doors, it was time for sanding, sanding, and more sanding. Far from fun, but the images of smooth, newly painted cabinets dancing in our heads kept the complaining at bay. Don’t you love our dusty hair and worn out smiles?
The buzzing of a sander was almost too much to bear, when what would our wondering ears hear, but the sound of an ice cream truck and its taunting jeer!
So, of course, we had to stop and enjoy a sweet treat!
Since this sanding escapade I have heard of a primer you can paint right over the top of glossy finishes. Not sure if this works, but the possibility of setting down the sander has me giddy with joy! The product is a primer with a shellac base. If any of you has experience with this item I would love to know how well it works!
Next we primed. Research revealed that oil-based or latex primer can be used for preparing the surface. We chose latex because a baby was/is on the way and we wanted to be sure to protect that precious package! (Oh, not me by the way, Stacy is the pregnant one!) Congrats girl!
Then came the color. After careful consideration (because we wouldn’t want to do this again for a while!) we chose a beautiful blue. The bar-none best way to paint cabinets in with a spray gun like the one pictured below. By spraying and not brushing the finish is flawless! Heads up though, you will need an air compressor to run the gun.
Stacy loved the glazed look when she flipped longingly through glossy magazines so with one extra step and a little more time we achieved the antique-y vibe she desired. There are a number of ways to glaze, but we chose to use the product below from Lowes.
We brushed glaze into the creases and corners, allowed it sit and soak in, then wiped it off with a rag.
Next we dumbed down the color on the rest of the door with a quick pass of a glaze drenched rag. Here is a finished door.
All that was left was to put these done doors back on their hinges. . . or so we thought!
Yes, we thought we were done, but as we admired our handy work we couldn’t help but agree a green wall would really make those painted cabinets pop.

So, with that the walls got a coat of green. A few more finishing touches and this kitchen was ready for its close-up! Here’s the MONEY SHOT! What do you think?

Beautiful! When we built our house, I chose glazed ivory cabinets and I was shocked at the high price tag! Great job and yours were much more economical!
