We are now moving into the Dining Room of the movie house! It was open to the living room and kitchen, so the color palette and general feel needed to flow throughout all 3 spaces. With a little more time there are a few things I would have changed, but overall I think it turned out pretty good. 🙂
You will notice that most of the rooms in the movie house are a little over- decorated. A basic rule in set decorating is you NEVER want more than a few feet of blank wall space. Therefore, art is essential! This room was very large, so dark and bulky pieces were important to help it feel more full. BUT, I wish I would have had time to paint the bench and dining chairs. There is a lot of the same color going on in this room. The good thing is you probably won’t notice this with in the movie much.
This little piece (which was actually an old radio) could act as a small bar area within the space if it were a real house. A piece of fabric hung inside of it on a tension rod provides some hidden storage. I’m not a fan of the lamp, but lack of time and money left me no choice.
Centerpieces can be simple, but for this set-up I wanted something a little more artistic. So, I layered circular objects that you would normally find within a dining room/kitchen area to create an interesting little display.
I struggled with what to put over the buffet area in the dining room. Originally I wanted to do the layered circles idea here, but it made a few of the higher ups a little nervous. 🙂 I swear if they could see what was in my head, they would have loved it!
But alas, a new idea had to be born. Knowing that the couple were supposed world travelers, I thought a map would be an easy piece of art that made sense. So, Nick (the art PA) built a frame while I aged the map. Then we painted the inside of the frame and hung the new art.

There are a few eating scenes during the movie, but my favorite one is a romantic dinner between the main couple. It was really fun to decorate for!
I have NO talent for cooking, so that task fell to Chris (the Production Designer) who is quite the chef. The whole crew’s mouth was watering and we constantly had to slap hands to keep our “props” from disappearing!!!
Of course candlelight is a staple in any romantic situation, but it especially looked lovely on camera. Here are a few shots I took of the monitor.
