About a month ago I went to a friend’s baby shower. I could have bought something on her registry, but I feel like homemade gifts mean so much more (some people do not appreciate homemade gifts, but I knew this lovely lady would). In past conversations this mother-to-be had expressed her love for my bird mobile, so I had a good feel for her style. I decided to make her some art with a vintage feel.
Here’s how you can make your own.
1. Cover a frame or canvas in fabric.
2. Add a vintage fabric doily on top. I secured mine with hot glue and staples (on the back).
3. Then, I created 2 “flowers” with strips of scrap fabric. I also cut out little leaves from green fabric.
I momentarily hung the piece in my entry way for a few photos. It’s scale is not really right for the space, but other than that it’s pretty cute. I would love to recreate this look with a huge canvas, tons of overlapping doilies, and bunches of randomly placed flowers.
As you can see my entry way is different from the last time you saw it. I like to change it with the seasons or when I find a new treasure I want to display. Right now straw hats hang from the knobs. I L-O-V-E straw hats. They don’t actually help me to be a better gardener, but I can sure look the part!
Here’s my spring entry way.
And the winter one.

That is such a cute idea. I love it just the way it is, but you’re right a bigger canvas with lots of doilies and flowers would be fabulous too!
So cute and sweet. I’m right there with you on homemade gifts. I’m the girl that totally ignores the 5 registries for parties because they’re so impersonal sometimes. (sometimes they’re my savior when I dont know them too well) I LOVE personal gifts and would LOVE something like this. Nice work!
Kara, do you have a tutorial for the bench in your spring entry way? I need something similar for my entry way.
By the way, love your blog.
Hey ElleX,
I do not have a tutorial for this bench because it is actually a locker room bench that came from a local YMCA that was remodeling. Sorry about that. I have made a number of benches throughout the years but have never put together a tutorial. I will be sure to do so next time!!! 🙂
