Today we are going to revisit our Evolution of a Room series. If you’ve missed any of the previous posts, go read about Creating Your List, Assessing Your Time, Space, & Budget, and Creating Your Plan. So Today we are moving on to the most important part of the process- Brining in Your Passions and Personality I really believe that in order to create a room you love for years to come, it’s vital that you add elements that speak to who you are.
What do you love to do? What are your dreams? What do you believe? Where do you come from? These are all questions that need to be answered and the answers can start you to lead you towards products and ideas that will allow your room to speak to your story.
I have loved working with B during her living room redo so much. I truly feel like I have gained a friend in the process as I’ve learned about her (and her family’s) past, passions, and personality.
Here are few highlights that I learned about B’s life-
– Both B and her husband grew up in Tulsa
– She and her husband met at The University of Tulsa
– They love traveling and want to visit a number of countries in their lifetime
– They would especially love to visit Africa
– Africa is part of their heritage
– B and her husband are christians
– Their main goals in life are to be positive christian examples, to be great parents, and to one day own their own business
– B’s husband loves San Diego and the relaxed lifestyle he associates with it
– B loves the hustle and bustle of New York City and the mixture of culture there
Ok, so how to we take some of these points and incorporate them into a room?
In the end, both B and I were taken with the real arial view photo of a hurricane and chose that for the space.
Do to the hurricane art, I started to think adding in a few more sea inspired accents would be a great way to continue the story. These sea salt crystals and mini glass buoys from Pottery Barn were perfect pieces to add to the design. I especially like the idea of the salt crystals because they speak to family’s christian beliefs. Christians are called to be “salt of the earth,” to preserve good in the world and to enhance the lives of people they encounter. I thought this small accessory could be a good reminder for them to live out that calling each day.
With the family’s connection to Africa and their desire to travel there, I wanted something in the room to speak to that. The juju is a feather headdress worn by tribes in Africa and they are just beautiful. I knew the texture and color we could bring in with one of these pieces would be perfect for the room.
Now here is what the design board looks like with our personalized pieces included. Much better than the impersonal board before! 🙂
