Hey Friends! Some of you have said you would like to see a drawn layout of our place so you can wrap your heads around our space plan. I will post that soon, but for this post you just need to know that we have one room (besides the bathroom) in the space that is closed off from the others. Tim and I thought it would be nice for guests to have a room to retreat to that’s all their own when they come for visits. We are still debating on certain design ideas for this room, but we pulled the trigger on one idea last night! 🙂
When thinking through different options for the flooring, we knew we wanted to choose something that was unique and not too expensive. There were a number of ideas we went through, but we finally landed on using VCT tile. Interesting choice, right? No doubt this material choice had the potential to look boring and uninspiring. However, I think our idea to cut the tiles into a hexagon shape took the cheap, commercial looking tile and turned it into something that looks custom and will really add character to the small space.
So we ordered our tiles and got to cutting! We had to make a number of cuts to get the shape we wanted, but it went faster than you would think and I definitely feel like the extra work will be worth the end product.
I chose to go with three different corrdinating colors so that we could lay a pattern into the floor. I went back and forth between bright, bold colors and a more neutral, sophisticated palette. In the end, I went with the softer, sophisticated option since the rest of our place will be infused with all sorts of hues.
So now you know the plan! I’ll be back with an update of how things turned out and the complete how-to soon!
PS- When we were cleaning up after cutting the tiles, we discovered some unintentional art that was created from all the tile shavings. Tim and I call it “workshop art!” 🙂

This sounds really interesting! Can’t wait to see it all laid out!
I have VCT tiles in my kitchen – red and grey. We didn’t take the time to cut them in fun shapes like you did but I will say the stuff wears well and can be really cute!
I love hexagonal tiles, can’t wait to see how they look.
I’m always amazed by your creativity! Can’t wait to see how it turns out!
That will be so fun! We went with VCT tiles in our kitchen remodel… blues/greens/slate colors, cut in half and then placed all random. I love our floor!
