One thing that always bothers me when it comes to designing and decorating living rooms is the fact that televisions just aren’t that pretty or interesting (of course I guess that depends on what you’re watching! :)) Because the television is already an undeniable focal point in most households, I wanted to come up with something that would make it more pleasing to the eye. So, here’s what we did with our own electronic eye sore.
Do you remember a while ago when Tim taught you how to mount your TV and hide the cords inside the wall? Well, once you’ve followed Tim’s instructions, the back of your TV looks something like this. . .
That makes it impossible to place a piece of art behind the TV (unless you want to unmount the TV, line up and drill the cord holes, and so on). You could totally do that, but I was planning on creating a more contemporary piece of art any way, so I opted to make a piece with 2 parts.
I decided how big of a surround I wanted my art to create behind the TV and then I took those measurements and cut a large rectangle out of some luan (thin plywood). I then cut the piece down the middle and made my cuts to accommodate the television mount. Here’s how it looked after that.
Then it was time for the fun stuff! I took a level (you could use any straight edge) and drew a bunch of straight lines that intersected one another.
Then I chose my paint colors!!
Next, I used painter’s tape to define and paint each shape. This process took a while because I had to do one color at a time and wait for the paint to dry before I could start on a nearby shape.
Eventually, I got all the paint in place and then it was time for mounting. Mounting this was super duper easy! The luan is really light, so we opted to use some industrial strength velcro to attach the pieces to the wall. Here’s how it looked when we got it up.
And here’s how it looks with the TV in place! I think I might fill in a few more shapes, but overall I’m really happy with how it turned out!
Our living room is really coming together and I can’t wait to share two more exciting changes we’ve made before I reveal the whole space to you!
If you have any clever ways you’ve made your TV wall more appealing, I’d love to see it!
Happy Monday!!

I just read your post on how you hung the tv and hid the chords, but what about a dvd player? Have you cleverly hid that too, because I want to know how to do that so I don’t have to get a tv stand for it, as well as my husband’s receiver (the big box that does the surround sound and stuff). Thanks! Love the post, going to get my husband to do it asap!
