Sometimes life doesn’t work out how we want it to. Sometimes we long for things and they allude us. Sometimes we work so hard in hopes that we can accomplish our dreams.
Well about 4 years ago I began to dream about the possibilities of making a living doing what I love (designing). And when I dream, I dream BIG. . . so I set a goal/dream to have my own design show. When I made it to the final cut to be on HGTV’s Design Star last year I thought things were going to work out. Well needless to say they didn’t, but the whole experience sent me into design overdrive and I began doing everything I could think of to improve my skills and prepare myself to make the cut this year. Not a single day went by without me thinking of my next opportunity to prove myself.
Finally the time did come and I sent in my audition video with great anticipation. I received a few phone calls that sent me into a giddy happy dance, but alas once again I fell short. It’s so incredibly difficult to accept defeat when you know you have not only put so much hard work into something but your whole heart as well. My soul has been sad and my spirit downtrodden. . . but God is faithful! And He promises me that He is in control, that “he has plans to prosper me and not harm me, plans to give me hope and a future.” He says he is going to do “more than I can ask or imagine” so I can look forward to that. As for right now, I will choose to praise the one who has already blessed me more than I deserve. And I will continue to pursue the dreams I feel he has placed in my heart with all I have until they come to fruition or until He changes my heart’s desires. . . and I encourage you to do the same! What wonderful stories we will have one day for HIS glory!

thanks so much for sharing your thoughts in this post. it can definitely be discouraging when something you hope for doesn’t happen, but you are right: God is faithful. He knows what is good for us!
i’ve been reading your blog for a while now and i love to see your creativity. what you and your husband have done to your home is super inspiring. did i read that it has been three years? congratulations on all you’ve accomplished in your home. i hope it is a blessing to you and your loved ones!
Im sorry you didn’t make it but have you tried pursuing other options? Maybe interning on a design show or for a big designer?
Honestly, Design Star seems to put talented people in really riduculous situations (a day to design a whole room? nothing great can possibly come from that) so I suspect its not as fun as it looks.
Sorry to hear you didn’t make it, Kara! God just has bigger and better plans in store for you and I look forward to seeing what those plans are!
Great philosophy, new friend! 🙂
We don’t always know what’s best for ourselves or when, but God does — and when the time is right He will open the doors for you. Just keep doing what you’re doing. One of our favorite mantras at thirtyeight20: “Unless the LORD builds the house, its builders labor in vain” (Psalm 127:1). Disappointment stinks, but keep praying about it and keep the faith in His plan and His timing.
OK back to work – I was excited to get your email over the weekend and will email you back today!
I loved your audition video, Kara! Your show idea sounded so fun, too. I know I definitely would have been watching! I hope that your big design break does come soon. Your designs are truly inspiring!
Thanks for your encouraging words ladies. And I hope all of you have success as you pursue your own dreams!!
sorry to hear you didn’t make the show 🙁
I still love all of your ideas and LOVE reading your blog 🙂

I love your show idea! As an avid HGTV viewer I think it would be great and would definitely watch it. I love you style and hope you make and win Design Star soon.

Keep the faith! HGTV isn’t the only forum for someone as talented as you! Loved the video; you did a great job!
I love the pitch for yall’s show. I hope HGTV catches on and puts you and Tim on!!!
You and Tim are one very talented couple and I am enjoying your blog. I was a bit distracted in your video with all the hand movement. It just seemed a bit much to me and I’m not trying to be ugly at all. I fully expect to indeed see you win Design Star one of these days.
