“Making” His Dreams Come True

“Making” His Dreams Come True

Last week I said I would give you an update on Tim’s bow tie business. (PS- They’ve got a new spring line out!)

I am pleased as punch to say that things are going well.  We all (Tim, me, Adam- the other guy, and Stacie- the other guy’s wife) felt like the idea had real potential when Tim came up with it.  And while we had high hopes, I think the amount of attention the business is getting in such a short time has been a pleasant surprise to us all. The guys launched at a perfect time (right around Thanksgiving) and have had steady sales so far.  Their bowties have been featured on lots of stylish man blogs (Uncrate & The Fancy), more neutral sites like HGTV.com, and even a few magazines!  The ties are in Esquire this month and they’ve been contacted my GQ France for a write up as well.

I’m so happy for and proud of Tim not because of the recognition that he’s been getting, but because He has worked diligently for a while now trying to figure out what his passion is, what his role in this life is.  I know it hasn’t been easy being married to someone like me who for whatever reason has been very clear about the path I want to take.  I feel like Tim represents a lot of our readers out there.  So many people who want to be passionate about their job, who want to love what they do but just can’t quite figure out what that career is supposed to be.  It’s been so wonderful as a wife to watch Tim go from an incredibly intelligent guy who could do everything, but wasn’t quite motivated to do anything in particular.  What I have witnessed for the past 5 months however is a go-getter, a man with a vision, and a person who moves with a focused confidence that can only come from a revelation sent by the Lord in his perfect timing.

(Below: Tim was interviewed for the TV show: The List- check it out here!)

While bow ties are part of the story, there is definitely more to it.  Tim is able to understand how things work and why.  I love the story his parent’s tell about Tim tearing apart a rocking horse he had as a child because he wanted to know why it “whinnied” when he road it.  Most children would be thrilled with the sound, Tim wanted to understand it.

Ever since I made it my goal to have a design show, Tim has been a bit reluctant to get on board.  His hestiantce came from not knowing exactly how he fit in the show.  He just didn’t want to feel confined to the title of carpenter.  Although Tim loves wood working, his passion (we’ve figured out) comes when he can introduce some sort of engineering feat or technological element into the project he is working on.

My mother got Tim a book for Christmas called “Makers.”  This is a title (“Maker”) that Tim is comfortable with.  Much like I want to push the boundaries with creativity in my designs, Tim wants to push the boundaries with new technology.  This book has really helped Tim collect all the ideas he has had involving his own life and what the book calls, “The Maker Movement.”

We have already began to incorporate high tech pieces into our loft design, but you can expect to see a lot more as we continue to try and push the envelope when it comes to our creations.  When I say “high tech” I think a lot of people go to star trek.  They think super cool, but impersonal design.  For us, that could not be farther from the truth.  The amazing machines that Tim has been using (CNC machines, laser etchers, 3-D printers) give us the ability to customize our designs and tailor spaces specifically to our clients.  And we’re super excited about it!

We feel like the success of the Bow Ties help to establish Tim as an achieved maker, ready and willing to help show others how they too can bring technology into their design!

So, there’s your update on Tim, his bow ties, and his newly fleshed out passion.  Are you still working towards discovering what you were made to do?  I sincerely hope so!  It’s never too late to find your passion!

Stay tuned to see some completed projects next week!

Hooray! Earlier in my marriage, I was also blessed with a strong sense of direction and purpose in my career. I have to say, having one person struggle while the other has opportunities (seemingly) arrive on a silver platter has to be one of the most difficult parts of sharing a life together, especially since we’re in very similar fields trying to do similar work. We found the key for us was to do our best to see ourselves on DIFFERENT career paths rather than one person “having it together” and the other one “struggling” to do the same thing. It helped us manage the day when I realized I wanted something different right as he was finding his professional stride. It’s all about getting joy, not jealousy, from each other’s successes. Congrats to your husband!

I little bit of confidence goes a long way! Can’t help but think God’s gifting Tim with confidence through his Bow Tie adventures, only to set the stage for what’s to come. Thank you both, for sharing your lives with the rest of us.

Undeniably believe that that you stated. Your favourite justification seemed to be at the net the easiest
factor to be aware of. I say to you, I certainly get annoyed while folks consider issues
that they just do not understand about. You managed to hit the nail upon the
top and also outlined out the whole thing without having side-effects
, other folks could take a signal. Will probably be again to get more.
