So, most of us have experienced the design wonderland that is IKEA. Although I would never buy a piece of furniture there that I would want to last a lifetime, I LOVE IKEA for this reason:
THEY MAKE GOOD DESIGN AFFORDABLE!
And because I think our surroundings play a big part in who we are and who we become- I appreciate IKEA. One thing I don’t like about IKEA is:
WHEN YOU COMBINE GOOD LOOKING PIECES WITH LOW PRICES YOU GET A LOT OF UNORIGINAL ROOMS.
I hate cookie cutter. It drives me crazy. I don’t want what everyone else has. I want something different, something more me. The good news is you can take your massed produced item from IKEA and make it much much more. Take this dresser for example.
I bought this dresser from IKEA for THE LAMP (the movie I worked on). It was a fine piece and looked nice, but it was just a bit too boring. So I took a few minutes and a little creative craftiness to make this piece look like an original!
If you’ve been around long enough, you know I have a fondness for using different tapes to add a little something extra to my furniture. That’s exactly what I did here. Of course most tape isn’t permanent but it will stay put for a good while- at least long enough for you to get bored with it and do something different! 🙂

Great Job, so creative! Looks very Campaign style?
The dresser looks great, Kara 🙂
The only “Ikea hack” we’ve done recently is hanging a Malm nightstand on the wall instead of attaching it to their headboard: http://hernandohouse.wordpress.com/2010/10/19/one-nightstand/
I just found your blog and love it! The yellow bedroom in your header is amazing! LOVE! And, this is such a great easy treatment for furniture. I have a dresser that needs a little something — this just might do the trick!
I love that dresser. How did you do it, meaning what kind of tape, etc. Thanks.
Hey Teresa!! I’m so glad you like the dresser! So, all I did was: put some strips of painter’s tape on a piece of cardboard, spray painted it gold, made a master stencil of the shape I wanted (to make sure each piece is the same), traced the stencil on the tape a bunch of times, and then cut out the shape with an exacto knife. Last, I simply placed the shapes in the corners of each drawer. I hope you will try the idea for yourself and send me pictures of your creation!!!
