MINI MAKEOVER- FROM COOKIE CUTTER TO CREATIVE ORIGINAL

MINI MAKEOVER- FROM COOKIE CUTTER TO CREATIVE ORIGINAL

So, most of us have experienced the design wonderland that is IKEA. Although I would never buy a piece of furniture there that I would want to last a lifetime, I LOVE IKEA for this reason:

THEY MAKE GOOD DESIGN AFFORDABLE!

And because I think our surroundings play a big part in who we are and who we become- I appreciate IKEA. One thing I don’t like about IKEA is:

WHEN YOU COMBINE GOOD LOOKING PIECES WITH LOW PRICES YOU GET A LOT OF UNORIGINAL ROOMS.

I hate cookie cutter. It drives me crazy. I don’t want what everyone else has. I want something different, something more me. The good news is you can take your massed produced item from IKEA and make it much much more. Take this dresser for example.

IKEA DRESSER

I bought this dresser from IKEA for THE LAMP (the movie I worked on). It was a fine piece and looked nice, but it was just a bit too boring. So I took a few minutes and a little creative craftiness to make this piece look like an original!

If you’ve been around long enough, you know I have a fondness for using different tapes to add a little something extra to my furniture. That’s exactly what I did here. Of course most tape isn’t permanent but it will stay put for a good while- at least long enough for you to get bored with it and do something different! 🙂

For those of you that are new- here are some quick, easy instructions on how I used tape to dress up this dresser!
1. Put some strips of painter’s tape on a piece of cardboard and spray paint it gold.
2. Make a master stencil of the shape you want (to make sure each piece is the same).
3. Trace the stencil on the tape a bunch of times, and then cut out the shape with an exacto knife.
4. Last, simply place the shapes in the corners of each drawer.
IKEA “hacking” has become quite popular over the past few years. Any of you talented people out there want to share some of your own IKEA upgrades? Drop me a line- I’d love to share your idea right here!

I just found your blog and love it! The yellow bedroom in your header is amazing! LOVE! And, this is such a great easy treatment for furniture. I have a dresser that needs a little something — this just might do the trick!

Hey Teresa!! I’m so glad you like the dresser! So, all I did was: put some strips of painter’s tape on a piece of cardboard, spray painted it gold, made a master stencil of the shape I wanted (to make sure each piece is the same), traced the stencil on the tape a bunch of times, and then cut out the shape with an exacto knife. Last, I simply placed the shapes in the corners of each drawer. I hope you will try the idea for yourself and send me pictures of your creation!!!
