So, I posted this blog about a week ago, but then managed to delete it somehow. Today I am reposting for anyone who missed it. Stay tuned- tomorrow’s post is about awesome ways to repurpose old springs!
You remember that we took out our pond (or rather had complete strangers from craigslist take it out for free in exchange for the liner and pump!) because of the major maintenance it required, right? Well that left a big space that was perfect for starting a little garden.
Because gardens aren’t much maintenance at all(note the sarcasm). Although I’m not sure why, I decided to test out my green thumb once more.
I went to the Farmer’s Market and bought a few vegetable plants. I got two different types of tomatoes, a yellow squash, and a lettuce variety pack.
I also bought this guy, but waited too long to put him in the ground. I think he’s a goner. 🙁 I’m not even sure what a bush pickle is. I don’t remember buying him. Maybe a cucumber?
Hopefully, I’ll have better luck with the rest of them. So anyway, Tim built me a 3ft by 3 ft box out of a spare piece of cedar we had.
Then, I filled it with soil.
Then I market out my 1 ft by 1 ft boxes with some twine and cut tacks.
Then I said a prayer as I planted each of the vegetables. Please Lord, just let something edible come from all this work!
After that, I was excited to try out a new type of gardening! Anthro has these “Seed Bombs” for sale. The instructions claim that you simply throw the 5 little pods that come in each package out onto the ground and where ever they land, they will grow! At $6 a package, I had to try it out.
I placed/threw one in the center of my garden box and in a couple of pots. The pods are supposed to produce a variety of wildflowers. I am a little skeptical of this actually working, but I’ll keep you updated. 🙂
So, here’s to hoping a have good news in a few weeks, or how ever long it takes to grow food and flowers. 🙂
Apparently I am really good at growing one thing- weeds! Look at that sucker!
PS- Who decides what’s a weed and what’s not. It seems to me that if you don’t have to plant it, take care of it, and it keeps coming back no matter how many times you pull it- it’s a weed. Does this seem messed up to anyone else!? 🙂

I agree. I was recently told by an agronomist: If a plant isn’t where you want it, its a weed.
I liked that sentiment, and went freely about pulling all manner of things from our new garden!! 🙂
Carissa, I heard exactly the same thing once and was going to post that!
Kara, I’m laughing at your weed, because I JUST posted about some backyard cleanup and that weed has nothing on what I cleaned up this past weekend. It’s downright embarrassing what my yard looked like! I’m so excited to see how your seed bomb turns out because I’ve had my eye on those for a long time!
Like Gloria, I am so excited to see how your seed bombs turn out! Maybe they’d work in my planter in the front of our house that I just cleaned out.
