We did it! We finally bought a sofa. I am pretty sure this is the first piece of furniture that I have ever bought brand new in my life.
First, I guess I should cover why I felt we needed a new sofa in the first place. You can see what we had before off to the left in the photo below. It was actually a great size for the space, but there were definitely some drawbacks.
1. I like the way the white brightened the room but let’s just be honest, it was constantly needing to be cleaned.
2. Although the size was great, the comfort of the couch was lacking. It was definitely not a space that I wanted to lounge on all Saturday.
3. When we had guests over there just wasn’t enough comfortable seating for them.
4. When it comes to selling our house, I felt like people looked at the space and didn’t feel like it could fit their furniture.
1. Clean lines.
2. Easy cleaning fabric.
3. A chaise at one end so that Tim and I could both spend long weekends lounging on the couch together.
4. A larger footprint that didn’t overwhelm the space, but provided more seating for guests when needed.
5. Lastly, I really wanted to choose a sofa that would work in this house, but also in the space that we are planning to move to once our house sells. (FYI- we decided to lay new hardwood floors, so we took our house off the market and will put it back on once the new floors are in.)
So, here’s the sofa that made the cut!
It’s a lovely dark gray color and fits almost all the conditions I set for it. The space we are planning to move to has a much bigger living area and I really feel the more seating, the better. So when I found out that this sectional came in 4 pieces, I was ecstatic! You see, right now I am using 2 of the sectional pieces for our house, but in the future I plan to use all four. Here are the other two pieces all wrapped up. I will keep them in a storage unit until we are ready to use them!
The one requirement that wasn’t totally met was the clean lines. Although the couch has nice squared off arms, it is a bit overstuffed for Tim and I. So, sometime soon we plan to re-stuff the back cushions with a higher density foam so that the shape is more crisp and clean. We also want to add some different legs to the piece.
Anyway, now to the part you really care about. You’re probably wondering how we got this guy for a measly $300, right? Well, here’s how it went down. When Tim and I got married, we registered at Dillards. And since we knew we would be moving a lot in the upcoming years, we opted to return a lot of items and just get gift cards. We’ve had those gift cards for 5 1/2 years now. Knowing we had that “money” available, I would randomly check the Dillard’s furniture department. So when I had finally decided we had to spring for a new sofa, I went by the department store hoping they would have something that worked. They did! And not only that, there was a 40% off sale going on! Thank you Jesus!
Originally, the sectional was $1700.00. With the 40% discount it came down to $1,020.00. Then we paid that down with our gift cards bringing the total to $320.00. So the total amount that actually came out of our bank account was a little over $300!
Tim and I are so glad that we waited 5 years to spend the gift cards until we found something we really wanted and needed. We feel like our patience paid off! 🙂
Do you have any similar stories of how you waited for a great deal and got it!?

Well, my story is not as romantic as yours but I did wait and wait for a Craigslist deal on a loveseat and finally got one (looking like new) for $40 bucks! Click here if you’d like to see it.
I like your new couch. Great idea about the different sectional pieces for future use. 🙂
Beautiful! Something similar happened with our wedding registry. We thought we’d be getting a queen-size bed as a wedding gift, so we registered for a mattress pad, several queen-size sheet sets, a bedskirt and a comforter
But after my husband moved in with his furniture, we realized there was no way we were going to fit a queen-sized bed. So we returned all the queen-sized items and paired the credits with a couple of gift cards. The gift-card total came to about $280, so I wrote a check for $20 for a shiny new red KitchenAid mixer. There was a rebate deal going on, so I also got a free subscription to Martha Stewart Living and a $30 rebate check in the mail. They actually paid us to buy the mixer. Plus, I now look at that mixer and think of it as a gift from several different people. Love it.
Super clean lined sofas usually aren’t very comfy, and this one looks like it is, so I think that’s a plus! I love the idea for a different texture for the legs, like wood or steal. Honestly the sofa was the second thing I saw because I LOVE that cowhide rug! I asked the leather worker in our town to find a black n white cowhide for me to by like 9 months ago and I don’t think he is ever going to. It looks really good with your sofa! Congrats on your patience paying off!
We get most of the furniture in our house from the as-is section with the exception of our couch and recliner. When my mom moved last year to her retirement home and sold her house she didn’t have room for her fantastic espresso leather couch and matching recliner, so she offered it to us for $400 which was a real steal. One bc it cost way more than that even on sale when she got it and two because she took such good care of it. With four kids and a dog we’ve found that while microfiber is easy to clean, it also gets dirty really easily too! Our coffee table we picked up for $20 at Mathis bros bc it didn’t have legs. I think it cost about $10 in wood to make the legs. I love it because it has really neat leather handles and since it was so cheap I don’t freak out when it gets colored on or what not. I love me some as-is!!
Girls, I love hearing about all these deals!! Great job!! I am in the process of getting a GREAT deal right now. If it works out, I will let you know all about it so you can get it for yourself!
Odd…I bought a new sofa this weekend too.
Paid 297 out the door. I love it!
That’s so smart to buy a sectional and use only the two pieces you need right now!
Lucky you, you picked a great sofa! I can’t believe you got it for $320, what a deal.
Love it! Yes, I just used my registry completion from pottery barn and used some gift cards to get a great new rug for 3.93 for our living room!!
