I bought this baby at a garage sale years ago. I love its shape and size, a perfect farmhouse table! But throughout our renovation process it had taken a beating and was begging for a clean slate! I had already started my sanding when I realized I needed to snap a before pic!
Here it is top sanded and looking a little naked. If this table was a hitch-hiker, those perfectly shaped legs would surely stop any car that came by!
Wanting to spice things up a bit but still be able to enjoy the lovely wood grain I opted to use a colored stain. It really kept the piece classic while injecting some energy! Multiple coats of poly deepened the color and made it look as rich as dark chocolate.
A little side note here- water based poly is a good option when coating lighter colors. An oil-based poly will leave a yellow film and change the color of your piece. Believe me, I learned this the hard way!
Here is what the table looks like set and ready to serve!!!

Love the blue stain! Wonderful job!
I do LOVE this! Thanks for the tip about waterbased vs oilbased.
Well, I think I will just send all of my projects your way… You get them done so beautifully AND you actually get them done!!

Kara, what a nice job! Love the blue finish and the tablesetting is very nice too!
I should have never looked at your blog. Danggg!!! I just posted a farmhouse table I bought yesterday. Hmmm I might have to think about some color stain now. Thanks alot, KARA!!! ;-)~ It’s all your fault now.
Very nice transformation
I really like how it turned out. Very nice.
Looks great. The color and the wood shade are a beautiful compliment.
Are you leaving it outside? I didn’t realize you could do that with a wood table.
Will it withstand the outside elements? Particularly rain.
Hey there Gordonandyanet,
Actually I covered the entire table with an exterior poly, so the table should hold up rather well. However we do still store the table during the winter months and try to cover it if we know rain will be around for a couple of days. 🙂
