SHELF WITH A STORY- MINI MAKEOVER

SHELF WITH A STORY- MINI MAKEOVER

I am spending this Tuesday in BEAUTIFUL Los Angeles! While the rest of the country is experiencing frigid cold weather, LA is a lovely 70 degrees or so! No wonder so many people live here! 🙂 I have had an INCREDIBLE day that I plan on telling you about later this week but right now I want to show off a mini makeover I completed for an office I designed.

I created this space for an urban cowboy who works hours upon hours in a 10 x 10 room. So, of course it is important that he is surrounded by things that make him feel comfortable and things that remind him of why he’s working- or as his wife says, “Why he should stop working.” 🙂

One thing that reminded this hard working man of his family was this piece of wood that came from his family’s farm. It was part of a fence and had been misshapen over the years as the horses rubbed up against it.

I have a thing for old wood and I LOVED that this piece had a story behind it, so I knew it had to be present in the design. I decided it should become a coat rack/shelf for the space. Here’s how it turned out!!!

The style of the piece goes perfectly with the rustic nature of the room and was placed in a prime location so it gets all the attention it deserves! The “hooks” are actually nails, but not just any nails!!! These nails have a history all their own! They were salvaged from old railroad ties. Supposedly, the numbers stamped on the nail head represents the year the nail was put in place. This allowed the railroad attendants to know how old the tie was and when it should be replaced.

I love that this old piece of wood now has a presence and a purpose where it can remind it’s owner of the good times at his grandparent’s farm!!
