Our Layout Plan- 1st Floor

Our Layout Plan- 1st Floor

Hey Friends!

Many of you have asked for me to draw a layout of our space to help you visualize what we’re working with over here.  Well, today I finally got around to doing that. 🙂

So, first I’ll show you the drawing and then I’ll try to explain it. 🙂 PS- this is not to scale.

I wrote numbers on the layout so that I could easily refer to a space and let you know what we’re envisioning in that area.  Let’s start with #1.

#1- (The Entry) Since this building is in a busy area, we wanted to create an entry way that kind of separates the rest of the space from the doorway.  We plan to build some sort of interesting wall here. We have thought of a million ideas but haven’t quite settled on one yet. I kind of like the idea of doing something semi-permanent that I can change out every once in a while for fun.  Here are 2 fun & unique wall ideas I’ve seen lately.

A wall of made from magazines. . .

So, now let’s head on over to the living area.

#2 Tim and I wanted to include some DIY projects in this home that we feel like anyone could do, but we also want to include some projects that are just really inspiring/impressive.  We are hoping this see through fireplace will be one of those inspiring/impressive features. 🙂 We also have plans for a faceted concrete mantel to top off the see through feature. Here are a couple of see through fireplace photos to help you get the idea.

#3- Above the fireplace will be the TV.  Tim has an awesome idea for a television that will be able to move up (to our loft) and down as well as flip to face either the living room or the office/dining room.  I’m not going to try and explain how he’s going to do this, but I think it’s going to be really fun! 🙂

#4- These are going to be glass bookshelves that flank the fireplace.  Our goal in the space is to create zones while keeping that open and airy feel.  We really think the see through fireplace and glass shelves will help do just that!

So, basically just imagine these shelves below, but with the horizontal wood pieces being made of glass!!

#5- We haven’t decided on anything extremely unique for the kitchen area yet, but we are considering raising the kitchen up off the ground around 8 inches.  We really like the idea of having different levels in the space to create interest.  This would also provide a real easy way for us to run/hide the plumbing and electric we will need for the kitchen area.  Here are some photos of elevated kitchens.

We don’t do a lot of fancy dining, but we definitely do a lot of working.  So, instead of dedicating valuable space to a dining area that would rarely get used, we’ve decided to make this space do double duty as our office area as well! 🙂  We’re making great strides in this area- I’ll be sharing pictures soon!

#6 These are the stairs that will lead from our first floor to the landing.  Just past the landing is the bathroom.

The bathroom is still a work in progress. I wish I had more to share about this space, but unfortunately we haven’t made a lot of headway here. 🙁

#7 This is the stairway that will lead from the landing to the lofted area.  The lofted space will extend over the top of the office area.

Ok, so does this help you guys see where we are headed with this space? I hope so! 🙂 We have a ton of work to do. . .  but I do think it’s coming along faster than our last home.  So, that’s good right!?

Huzzah for see through fireplaces! We have one in our home, it’s pretty much why we bought our town home. And it extends up to our loft with another fireplace upstairs. I am pretty excited to see this whole tv system you’ve got planned. Right now our situation is less than desirable. (if you’d like to see what I mean I’ve got pictures in my home tour section on my blog). I can’t wait to see more!

Love, love, love the magazine wall and based on watching your blog this past year it is sooooo you.

Really like the kitchen idea as well. Something about the rise makes it feel warmer and more welcoming.

The bookshelves idea will be the bomb:)

Nikki I looked at your place and I think you guys have done a great job, especially with the tight timeline you were dealing with.

I love the diagonal flooring in the one room and love the couch in the office area.

I love the see-through fireplace. That is definitely going to be in my next home (which will be my forever home, so it may be 10 years)!
